History of Chinese Economic Thought: Overview and Recent Works, Chang, James L. Y., History of Political Economy; 19(3), Fall 1987, pages 481-502.

This paper presents a literature review and an overview of the major schools of economic thought in traditional China. It also introduces the three-volume History of Chinese Economic Thought (in Chinese) by Jichuang Hu. In addition to describing the principal features and general structure, three fundamental questions are examined: Hu's system of periodization; his application of the Marxist doctrine of class struggle to Chinese economic thinking; and the Western economic concepts he adopted Hu's masterpiece sets a landmark in the study of Chinese economic thought although his Marxist framework encounters some methodological problems.
